Sensory Ecology 2010 - Limited places still available

Our international course for postgraduate students - Sensory Ecology - will be again held this year. This course, which began in 1992, is held in Lund Sweden, every two years during the middle two weeks of October. This year the course will be held from October 3-17.

There are still limited places available on the course and interested students are encouraged to apply.

The course is a fantastic opportunity for young scientists in the sensory neurosciences to meet the world's leading authorities in sensory ecology in a casual and enjoyable atmosphere. We have also found that the contacts students have made at this course have been invaluable for their development as scientists, leading to new friendships and collaborations.

The course has a comprehensive web site where information about the contents, organisation and application procedures for the course are detailed. The web address is:

http://www.cob.lu.se/sensecol/index.html

Our warmest regards,
ISN Email List Message - Neuroethology Conference Survey

Dear Neuroethology enthusiasts,

If you are a member of the International Society for Neuroethology and/or if you attended the International Congress of Neuroethology in Salamanca Spain last week, then you should have received a survey asking you for feedback on the Congress and your input about future Congresses. We will close the survey on Aug 26th.
In particular, you are being asked for your input regarding the 2104 Congress. There are two proposals: One for Sapporo, Japan (http://icn2014.wordpress.com/) and the other for Quito, Ecuador (http://www.icn2014.org/). Please take a moment to look at the websites for these two meeting sites and give us your feedback. The results of this poll will be taken into account by the Executive Committee in selecting the site.

If you did not receive the survey, please contact Linda Hardwick at Allen Press <lhardwick@allenpress.com>.

In the near future, you will also receive a ballot for electing the Officers and Council members of the Society.
I look forward to receiving your feedback.

Best wishes,
ISN Email List Message - Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour

Dear Neuroethologists,

An extensively revised and updated edition of the textbook 'Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour' (by Peter Simmons & David Young, Cambridge University Press) has been published this Summer.

Unfortunately, the flyers about the book that were meant to be distributed at the Neuroethology Congress in Salamanca went astray somewhere between Cambridge and the Congress. But you can find details at:

http://www.cambridge.org/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521728485

Best wishes,
ISN Email List Message - Proposals for the 2014 ICN

Dear ISN members,

There are two proposals for the 2014 International Congress of Neuroethology:
Sopporo, Japan (http://congress.coop.hokudai.ac.jp/ICN2014/)
Quito Ecuador (http://www.icn2014.org/)

For those of you who are attending the ICN in Salamanca, there will be presentations about these two proposals at the business meeting on Thursday. After these presentations, we will take an informal poll of the attendees to judge their preference.

We will also conduct an online poll of all members. The final decision by the executive committee will be influenced by the preferences of the membership, but will also take into account other considerations such as financial matters.

Please take a moment to look at these two proposals.
ISN Email List Message - post-doctoral position available

Hi Folks,

I suspect that many of you are in the final throes of preparation for our upcoming meeting. Please take time to forward this position anouncement to any suitable candidates you know who may not be members of ISN. Thanks. See you in Salamanca.

Cheers,
Cole Gilbert

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE: An NSF funded post-doctoral position is available working on motion vision of visually-guided predatory beetles. They run so fast after their prey that they go blind and have to stop (Gilbert, 1997, J Comp Physiol 181:217-230). There are several aims that could be pursued. One involves using sharp electrodes to record from photoreceptors and motion-sensitive neurons of the optic lobe; another involves training beetles to run on a track ball and pursue targets presented on a CRT. Programming skill in Matlab will be beneficial for either aim. Starting appointment will be for 1 year at a salary of 40K $US plus benefits. This is a 3 year award with opportunity for reappointment based on annual performance. Visit my poster (P 351) in Salamanca or contact me at: Cole Gilbert, (cg23@cornell.edu), Department of Entomology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853, USA
