The Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Vienna announces the position of a Full professor of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology (full-time permanent position under private law).

As stated in its development plan (http://www.univie.ac.at/rektorenteam/ug2002/entwicklungs plan.html) the University of Vienna aims at strengthening its position as a major research-oriented university. Key elements of this strategy include the provision of an attractive range of research-based study programmes, support for furthering the work of junior academic colleagues, and high-calibre professorial appointments.

The Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Vienna announces the position of a

Full professor of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology

(full-time permanent position under private law). The University of Vienna intends to increase the number of women on its faculty, particularly in high-level positions, and therefore specifically invites applications by women. Among equally qualified applicants women will receive preferential consideration.

The successful applicant is expected to develop a competitive research program in neurobiology. The applicant should be competent in systems oriented research and the application of modern molecular, cellular and/or genetic techniques. Her or his approach should be embedded in the analysis of behaviourally-relevant sensory and/or neuronal systems and networks.

Furthermore he/she is expected to play a pivotal role in the development of the Department of Neurobiology and Cognition Research.

Successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

- PhD and post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution.
(Austrian or equivalent international academic degree in the relevant field)

- Outstanding research and publication record, with an excellent reputation as
an active member in the international academic community (Habilitation (venia
docendi) or equivalent international qualification in the relevant field is
desirable)

- Experience in designing, procuring and directing major research projects, and
willingness and ability to assume the responsibility of team leadership

- Experience in university teaching, and willingness and ability to teach at all
curricular levels, to supervise theses, and to further the work of junior
academic colleagues

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in Bachelor programmes and participation in committees

ISN Email List Message - Gordon Conference on Neuroethology

Dear Neuroethologists,

There are still room available in the Gordon Research Conference on Neuroethology for more registrants. The conference will be held Aug 10-15 at Magdalen College at Oxford University. There are opportunities for poster presentations and there slots set aside for three ad hoc presentations by attendees who are interested in giving a talk.

This conference is held only once every three years. Catherine Carr and I are the co-chairs this year. The co-vice chairs are Jochen Zeil and Susan Fahrbach. This meeting will be very discussion-based. The presentations are aimed toward specific questions. It will not be your typical research meeting. In particular, the last session of the meeting will be devoted to assessing the current state of Neuroethology.

Prior to the main Gordon Research Conference, on Aug 9th and 10th, there will be a unique pre-meeting for graduate students and post-docs called "Neuroethology 2050". This 2 day symposium is for young researchers to imagine what the field will be like in the year 2050. It is being organized by Zoe R. Donaldson, Emily Baird & Norbert Boeddeker. in Insect Chemical Ecology

Department of Ecology, Section of Chemical Ecology and Ecotoxicology, Lund University

We advertise postgraduate scholarships and post doc positions as part of a strategic initiative to
strengthen research collaboration between the research groups in Insect Chemical Ecology at
Lund University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at Alnarp (The Linn�us
initiative ICE-3). The two research groups, currently comprising more than 50 scientists,
students and technicians, form a strong cross-disciplinary environment including research on
ecology and evolutionary biology, neurobiology, physiology, molecular biology and genomics,
as well as more applied aspects including pest control and conservation biology.

Four postgraduate scholarships (deadline for application May 15th or 21st, 2008,
depending on position):

- Thrips chemical ecology
- Evolution of novel pheromones
- Pheromone strains, host plant races and speciation
- Chemical pollination ecology

Three post doc positions (will be filled when suitable candidates are found):

- Chemical ecology of bed bugs
- Molecular analysis of moth pheromone production
- Pheromone identification and biosynthesis

The starting date is negotiable but preferably

www.ExpelledExposed.com finds new creationist "documentary" lacking accuracy on many levels

Oakland, California, April 15, 2008 -- Millions of dollars have been spent promoting Ben Stein's Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed to fundamentalist church groups, but that money would have been better spent on fact checkers.

www.ExpelledExposed.com <http://www.expelledexposed.com/>, a website launched today by the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), reveals the truth behind the creationist movie's misrepresentations.

"Creationists have been making the same arguments for decades," says Eugenie C. Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education. "They've gotten better at marketing these claims, but they're no more valid now than during the Scopes trial of the 1920s. Creationists have been predicting the death of evolution for over a century, yet it is constantly affirmed by evidence from fields Darwin could never have imagined." Given the damning assessment at www.ExpelledExposed.com, Scott adds, "Perhaps the filmmakers should have spent more time hitting the books, instead of beating up on hardworking scientists."

Throughout the movie, Ben Stein claims that "Big Science" represses intelligent design to advance an atheistic agenda, but Peter Hess, from NCSE's Faith Outreach Project, doesn't buy it. "There are many successful evolutionary biologists who are also people of faith," he observes, "and a host of people of faith who regard intelligent design as a misconceived and harmful rejection of science. In attempting to pit Christianity against science, Expelled misrepresents both."

"We reviewed public records and reports on the intelligent design promoters who were supposedly discriminated against, and we discovered that the claims that they lost their jobs over intelligent design are unsupported," explains Josh Rosenau, a biologist at NCSE.
"That said, professors who aren't making advances in their field, editors who disregard their journal's established practices, and lecturers who repeat creationist falsehoods shouldn't be surprised if they have trouble holding jobs. These people weren't expelled; they flunked out."

www.ExpelledExposed.com contains information about the "martyrs" from Expelled, and also of real scientists who successfully challenged established science. "The difference," NCSE researcher Carrie Sager observes, "is that real scientists back their challenges with experimental results. Results are what changed minds, forced textbook revisions, and earned Nobel Prizes."

More insidious are the movie's attempts to link evolution to the Holocaust. Susan Spath, a historian of science at NCSE, comments: "The implication that Darwin led to Nazism and the Holocaust is an irresponsible misrepresentation of a terrible history. Hitler abused many things, including science, and Expelled is wrong to shift blame off his shoulders and onto evolution."

www.ExpelledExposed.com quotes the Anti-Defamation League's Abe Foxman, who described similar claims in a previous creationist movie as "an outrageous and shoddy attempt ... to trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust."

Just a reminder to all Neuroethology members about registration for AMAM 2008. This meeting is being held this year June 1-6 on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. This meeting is unique in bringing together robotics engineers and biologists interested in locomotion for a week of single track talks, posters and other interactions. We have really put together, what I think is going to be a great meeting, and I am looking forward to it. Several neurothologists have submitted abstracts for the meeting and I am excited about having a real presence of both biologists and engineers.

The University of Exeter is building an enthusiastic, integrative, interactive, and broad group in Animal Behaviour with the goal of
making it an international centre of excellence.

We seek future colleagues who would like to understand the why and how of natural behaviour; the neural mechanisms which control it, its function and adaptive value, and its origin, maintenance, and changes over evolutionary time. Applicants should be asking these kinds of questions: What is the behaviour's purpose in the sense of what are the problems that the behaviour solves? How does solving the environmental or social problem of interest maintain or enhance fitness? Why and how does it evolve? We seek highly interactive individuals who would not
hesitate to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries when necessary, and do at least some work on natural populations of vertebrates or invertebrates.

We have a preference for those interested in animal signalling, mate choice, habitat choice, or prey choice related to anti-predation mechanisms, but first-rate people outside these areas, for example in behaviour phylogenetics, or animal cognition in the context of behaviour in the natural environment, are most welcome to apply. The successful applicant will show evidence of an original and independent research programme, an established record of high quality research publication, and preferably a record of successful application for research funding. The person appointed will be expected to teach undergraduates in Behavioural Ecology, and will have the opportunity to develop specialist teaching at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels in her/his area of research expertise. The appointment will be made at a level commensurate with the persons qualifications, skills and achievements.

The annual South East Nerve Net will take place Friday and Saturday March 28th and 29th, 2008 in Atlanta, GA.
There will be two keynote speakers, John Hildebrand (University of Arizona) and Erich Jarvis (Duke University).

This student-oriented regional meeting is designed to bring together research groups from the southeastern United States who are interested in basic neuroscience research, with a particular emphasis on comparative systems neurobiology and the neural basis of behavior.

Registration deadline is Feb 29, 2008.

As always, the 10 minute talks will be reserved for students and post-docs. Please follow the instructions for abstract submissions.
The cost for registration is $50 for students and post-docs and $75 for faculty. This fee pays for a Friday evening reception, three meals, and
breaks on Saturday. Travel awards are available. Please check the box on your registration form.
